Pretty Up Eastrington is an award-winning environmental action group dedicated to making and keeping the village beautiful. We organise regular litter picks, plant bulbs, tend flower beds, planters, hanging baskets and tubs around the village, and raise money through events like our open gardens days and craft sales towards village projects. We have built welcome signs round the village, paid for a new village noticeboard, litter bins, and pond clearing, and support other village groups in their work.

We welcome volunteers of all ages to help and support us, both on the ground in other ways to make Eastrington a lovely village to live in. If you can't make the AGM, please get in touch anyway.

Goodbye Bo! You will be missed

As long as we are together “Whoop she goes again!"

Derek Bovil – Bo - 13^th May 1935 – 10^th January 2012.

Sadly passed away after a short illness. Bo, a wonderful man and a true character of Eastrington but well known in Goole and Howden.

Born in Howden, he worked as a farm labourer before he did his national service in the Army. He then had a driving job at RAF Finningley. He then worked at Carlsberg for 33 years as a yard man and a driver finally retiring in 1991.

He met his wife Evelyn at a dance in Howden in 1959, when they married and moved to Eastrington. After a happy marriage Evelyn sadly passed away 10 years ago. They had 4 children Angie, Mandy, Peter and Jonathon.
Although Bo had retired he kept himself very active and had a routine of walking dogs at Tim’s farm, feeding carrots to the horses on Howden road, buying bread from Goole to feed the birds at Eastrington ponds, and tending the baskets on the village green.

Fond and happy memories of many nights in the Black Swan where he had more dancing partners than Fred Astaire. Sadly missed but never forgotten …..

'Pretty Up Eastrington' would also like to add a huge farewell to Bo for his support with the various planting projects in the village. For the past few years the hay-baskets outside the pub along the church green have never looked so good thanks to Bo - we shall miss him terribly.

Northern Lights Spectacular

If you get a chance tonight (Monday) or tomorrow (Tuesday) then check out the skies for the Northern Lights. .....They have appeared more vividly and are visible over a wider area than normal because of a coronal mass ejection, (CME), a burst of electrically charged particles thrown out by the Sun, which was noticed by astronomers last week........

Last night they were visible in Scotland and the North East, but also in parts of Yorkshire especially where there is no or very little light pollution. I can add from experience that Duckingham Palace Pond is a great place for stargazing.

Goole and Howdenshire Local Action Team meeting

The next meeting of the Goole and Howdenshire Local Action Team will take place at Eastrington Village Hall this Wednesday, 25th January 2012 at 2 pm.

Local Action Teams help to encourage individuals and communities across the East Riding to become more involved in decisions that are made about the public services that they receive. The Local Action Teams also involve local people in tackling local issues to improve the quality of life of communities across East Riding. blue bin mystery

I recently read a notice in the local store about people not receiving their new bins after the old one had been removed. I was quite relieved – I thought it was just mine. I watched with interest as the van and the men with the clipboards made its way round the village. I even had a conversation with one of the clipboard men. And I am left wondering – wh

at were the clipboards for? I called ERYC and was told that I would receive a bin in 5 – 10 working days. On working day 11 (today) I called again, spent a lot of time on hold and was told that the bin would arrive in the next 5 working days. I wait with interest! The “customer service” person told me that “people make mistakes”. I advised her that I was not the only person in this situation – which brings me to the reason for this message. She said she was not aware of any others......
Apart from a notice in the shop, is there any way to get the message out. The replacement bins have to be ordered by the person who needs it – they will not be sent out automatically.

Theft of Catalytic Converters

The theft of catalytic Converters from vehicle exhaust systems has increased dramatically in the East Riding.
Although the actual numbers are low, the rise is disturbing.

Between Jan 2011 - Sept 2011, there were 2 reports in the East Riding.
In October there were 6 and in November, 7.
Thieves may cut or unbolt them from the exhaust system of parked vehicles, or may steal them from commercial vehicle compounds, sometimes taking the complete exhaust system. The latter is usually aimed at vans.
The converters contain small amounts of high value metal, so have a scrap value. They can also be sold on to the motor trade and fitted as low cost replacement parts.

I would ask you all to be aware of this rising crime trend, and to contact us if you are offered a 'used' part as a replacement after a car service or MOT.

I must stress that this exhaust component is sometimes legitimately re-cycled by mechanics and exhaust fitters as it tends to outlast the rest of the exhaust system, but there should be relatively few in circulation and it would assist me to know who is offering to fit them so that I can verify how they are sourced.

Van owners may wish to consider the security of the area where these are left unattended, or to seek advice on making the converter more difficult to remove. Mercedes Sprinters seem to be the most popular target at this time.

NG Carbon capture pipeline

TREES COMPANY FOR CHILDREN’S CHARITY

An unusual festive event will take place in Howden, near Goole, this year to raise money for Action for Children.
On Saturday 10 December, the town’s historic Shire Hall will host Howden Tree Festival - a collection of Christmas trees decorated and displayed by local companies - as a novel way of supporting the charity’s work with vulnerable and disadvantaged children in Yorkshire.

Companies such as Goole-based glass manufacturers, Guardian UK, will pay a fee to decorate a tree in a way that represents their business. For a small entry fee (£1), members of the public can admire the artistic talents and ingenious efforts of each company.

Action for Children fundraiser, Vicky Thaxter, is pleased to be involved in the first tree festival organised by her team: “This kind of event is a new one for us, and I think it is a lovely idea. As well as the trees, which I expect will be stunning, there will be a cake stall, a tombola and a book stall - so everyone will be catered for.”
In addition to main sponsor Guardian UK, local companies Nail Salon of Howden, Jay Jays Café Bar and Celebrations Cakes are taking part, and Vicky is keen to hear from others who want to show off their creative abilities.

There are laws about when fireworks can be sold, and to who – as well as the times fireworks can be set off.

If you are under 18 years of age:

If you are under 18, you can't:

buy the types of fireworks which can be sold only to adults
have fireworks in public places

If you do, the police can give you an on-the-spot fine of £80.

Using fireworks legally:

It is against the law to:

set off or throw fireworks in the street or other public place
set off fireworks between 11.00 pm and 7.00 am – except during certain celebrations

If found guilty by the courts, you could be fined up to £5,000 and can be imprisoned for up to three months. You may be liable for an on-the-spot fine of £80.

Over the past five years over 350 preschool children, some as young as one year old, were treated in hospital for firework injuries, please remember "Fireworks are dangerous and can be lethal".
The utmost care is necessary in their storage, handling and use, whether you are organising a display for the family, friends or the general public. Humberside Fire and Rescue Service, Police and Ambulance Service want you to have a safe event - by following some simple do's and don'ts risks can be greatly reduced.

Street beat update - Howdenshire Ward 4 Nov.

1.Priority
Issue: - Anti-social behaviour, Scalby Lane, Gilberdyke.

Action:- Following complaints of Anti-social behaviour the NPT team are actively working to reduce incidents of this nature in order to improve the quality of life for the residents of Gilberdyke. Anyone witnessing anti-social behaviour is asked to call in with details. Howdenshire Neighbourhood Policing team will aim to respond to all calls for service in relation to this priority. Any incidents that are not attended will be investigated and followed up by the team. Positive action will be taken against anyone engaging in anti-social behaviour. East Riding of Yorkshire council anti-social behaviour team also investigate reports of anti-social behaviour the 2 teams will be working together along with other agencies to target the issue.
Officers from the NPT have concentrated their patrols in this area and will continue to do so. Anyone who acts in a disorderly manner can expect to be dealt with firmly. Our patrols will include the use of arrest powers and the consideration of the use of £80 penalty notices for disorder to anyone causing nuisance at these sites. Regular patrols will be made on an evening to reassure the public and to send a positive message that this kind of behaviour will not be tolerated. There will be no discretion shown.
A local youth is due to appear at court on 25^th October for several offences in the Gilberdyke area including assault, criminal damage and breaching an anti-social behaviour order.
A further Gilberdyke male is due to be issued with a final warning for a public order offence
Quantities of alcohol have been seized from youths in Gilberdyke during October.

2. Priority
Issue: - Underage drinking, Holme Upon Spalding Moor Village Hall.

Action:- Over the past few months there have been sporadic reports of underage drinking around the Village Hall in Holme Upon Spalding Moor, this inevitably leads to anti-social behaviour and reports have also been received of criminal damage.
All local residents are reminded that this is a designated no drinking area and nobody should be drinking alcohol in that area whatever their age.
As well as alcohol related problems which inevitably occur when youths drink there is also the issue of litter which is left behind.
Police Officers, Police Community Support Officers and Special Constables will continue to patrol the area anyone seen drinking will be tackled, and alcohol will be seized.
Letters will be sent to parents of youths found with alcohol in their possession and those who continue to offend will be liable to prosecution.
Officers from Humberside Police Licensing department and trading standards recently organised a test purchase operation. The operation involved 2 underage customers attempting to purchase alcohol from a variety of retail outlets throughout the area, the customers were refused sales in all premises visited.
Anyone with any information is asked to call Howden Neighbourhood Policing Team on 0845 60 60 222.

3. Priority
Issue: - Poaching, Broomfleet and surrounding villages.

Action:- A number of calls for service have been received from the local farming community reporting incidents of suspicious people and vehicles poaching in the area. The neighbourhood team will patrol rural areas and check any suspicious persons or vehicles.
Officers from Incident response teams and neighbourhood teams will attend calls for service where they are able to and deal with any offences.
If we are unable to attend or the offenders have left prior to our arrival evidence from informants will be gathered and action taken.
Warning letters will also be sent to persons seen in the area if there is insufficient evidence to prove an offence.
There is an active farm watch in the area and local officers are in regular contact with the co-ordinators. If you see anything suspicious or are in any doubt please call Humberside Police on 0845 60 60 222

4. Offenders brought to justice
On 11^th September 2011 Police were called to a disturbance at an address in Scalby Lane Gilberdyke where a male had allegedly assaulted his girlfriend and a friend of hers. When officers arrived he became violent and assaulted 2 officers before he was restrained and arrested. He was subsequently charged with 3 x common assaults. 2 x assault Police and one count of obstruct Police.
A Gilberdyke youth was arrested on 3^rd October for assault he was charged with this offence and has subsequently been charged with other offences including public order and breaching his anti-social behaviour order. The youth appeared at Beverley youth court on 25^th October 2011 and will reappear in January 2012.
On 10^th October a local resident witnessed a local youth cause damage to the village hall in Holme Upon Spalding Moor, enquiries are ongoing and the perpetrator is due to be dealt with.

On 12^th October a vehicle left the road on the B1230 at North Cave. A male left the vehicle and following an extensive search by Police the driver was arrested and charged with Driving over the Prescribed Limit and Driving without due care and attention.
On 15^th October 2011, officers were called to Breighton Airfield by security officers who reported 2 males on site stealing tyres. Despite this being a massive area officers located the 2 males who were both arrested, both males are currently on police bail while enquiries continue.
On 22^nd October a female was issued with an £80 Fixed Penalty Notice for a Public Order offence on Main Road, Gilberdyke.

5. Meetings
You are invited to attend any of the meetings:
Police Surgery. Means: an opportunity for you to meet privately with a member of the neighbourhood team to discuss any policing issue of concern. This is a drop-in event so you may have to wait a few minutes.

Police and Communities Together Meeting. This is a public meeting where the police and other public authority representatives will be present. Its main purpose is to determine what the local priorities for action over the next three moths will be. It gives members of the public an opportunity to raise their concerns and influence those decisions.

Street Briefing. This means that the whole neighbourhood team will be briefed on current problems in the area and tasked to deal with them. The public can meet with the officers and be informed about how they can help with these issues.

6. News and Appeals

Mischief Night
On 24th October, 2011, the Howden & Howdenshire, and Snaith & The Marshlands Neighbourhood Policing Teams are launching a campaign within the area to highlight the problems caused over the October / November period leading up to and directly after Mischief Night on 4^th November.

Historically, there have been problems over this period, particularly in the Howden, Gilberdyke and Rawcliffe areas. These have involved eggs and flour being thrown at houses and damage being caused.
Our campaign, under the heading “Your Mischief Their Misery” will run from 24th October to 6th November and will comprise the following elements:

A poster and leaflet campaign throughout the area highlighting this problem.
High visibility patrols in the areas where problems have occurred.
Visits by the Neighbourhood Policing Team to retailers of eggs and flour to discourage sales to children and young people over this period.

We want to put out a very strong message to that minority of young people tempted to take part in this kind of activity. Basically, it is “Use your head! Don’t do it!”

To those who are involved, just think:

How would you feel if the victim was your mum, dad, grandma or granddad?

How would you feel if it was your house or car that had been covered in eggs or flour? (Remember egg can permanently damage car paintwork)

To parents and carers we are asking the questions:

Do you know where your children are?
Do you know what they are doing?

We need your help here! Please be aware! Please be responsible!
And finally, this issue of responsibility also applies to shop-keepers and supermarket staff. Your shop will be getting a visit from one of our team. Please help us and your community by not selling large quantities of eggs and flour (or preferably none at all) to young people over this period.

As always, we must stress that these problems are caused by a minority of young people and it is this minority who we are targeting through this campaign.
The distress and misery caused by anti social behaviour and minor damage around Mischief Night can be traumatic for those targeted and very often the most vulnerable people in our communities are the victims.
This is not about fun. Very often these acts are openly malicious and property is permanently damaged. If offences are committed those responsible will be dealt with and our patrols will be out and about ensuring that we are around to do this.

Making it Happen - East Riding Local Development Framework

Core Strategy Further Consultation
East Riding of Yorkshire Council have recently published our Core Strategy Further Consultation and the accompanying Sustainability Appraisal. The closing date for responses is Monday 19th December 2011.

The Local Development Framework will set out planning policies and proposals on a range of issues from where new houses, jobs and shops will go to how we should protect our countryside from inappropriate development. It will guide planning applications for the next 17 years.

The Core Strategy will set out a strategic overview of how much development will occur in the East Riding of Yorkshire for new housing, economic development, retail and transport schemes and it will identify settlements where most of this development will take place. Last year we consulted on the Preferred Approach Core Strategy, which was a first draft. We received an excellent response and have listened to the comments and made a number of changes. The changes are set out in the Further Consultation document. The main changes relate to:

New and revised statements for how the larger towns will look by 2028
The number of new homes to be built across the East Riding of Yorkshire
How many new home will be built in individual towns and villages
The types of development that will be allowed in the smaller villages
The amount of land that is needed to support new jobs and economic growth
How much affordable housing will be required within new housing sites

A Sustainability Appraisal for the document has been prepared and should be viewed alongside the documents. The Sustainability Appraisal assesses whether the Revised Policies are the most sustainable options. Various background documents have been prepared. These provide more detail on the approach in the consultation document.

The Fat Cakes come with everything you need to make up a tasty little treat for your garden birds. Just follow these three simple steps:

Allow your fat to cool and remember do not use fat from salty bits of meat, polyunsaturated margarines or vegetable oils - lard and beef suet are best. For more advice on food for birds visit RSPB
Pour into the mould provided and add the string and seeds.
Once you have added all the components, just put your fat cake into the fridge to solidify. Once it's gone hard, it's ready to hang.
*As the fat cakes are quite bulky items it may not be possible for them to be posted through your letterbox. If you're not at home when delivery is attempted, you'll need to go down to your local sorting office to collect your fat cake.

The Trading Standards Office are making people aware of the following scam:
A card is posted through your door from a company called PDS (Parcel Delivery Service) suggesting that they were unable to deliver a parcel and that you need to contact the on 0906 6611911 (a Premium rate number).

DO NOT call this number, as this is a mail scam originating from Belize .
If you call the number and you start to hear a recorded message you will already have been billed £315 for the phone call.
If you do receive a card with these details, then please contact Royal Mail Fraud on 020 7239 6655.

Love Where You Live is a new anti-litter campaign that encourages and enables us to make where we live, work and play the kind of place we really want it to be.

It’s about communities and organisations working side by side to make their little bits of England cleaner, greener and altogether more loveable.

We are celebrating the Love Where You Live campaign on October 17 with a Day of Action across the country.

Five minutes to show you Love Where You Live -Be part of the Day of Action for Love Where You Live, and give just five minutes at noon on Monday October 17 to show your support. Whether it’s a litter pick outside your offices, a spot of weeding in a community garden or a Big Tidy Up in your area, as Big Ben strikes, please show you care and be part of a national movement.

EASTRINGTON STATION TIDY UP

Thanks to Eirinn, Jonathan, Francoise and Jane for helping out with this morning's big tidy up at Eastrington Station - photos should be on the Eastrington blog soon, but I don't want to clutter up your email accounts with attachments. We weeded and tidied up the station platform area and below, and removed the platform planters to redo - if anyone didn't make it in time, there is plenty of scope for activity on another day around the car park, and further along the station, and the "wild orchard".

Eirinn is participating as part of her Duke of Edinburgh award work. Pretty Up Eastrington welcomes capable children to help with planting, weeding and litterpicking, as long as they are accompanied and instructed by a parent. An ideal way to enhance a volunteering/citizenship portfolio or add an activity to your cv.

Saturday/Sunday October 1st-2nd PUE stall at the village hall next weekend October 1-2 for the Scarecrow Festival - jams, chutneys and crafts available. Refreshments will be served. Come and buy - or come and help out for an hour or two.

Sunday October 9th at 4pm last litter pick of the year. Meet at the Black Swan carpark. Please dress suitably for the weather, strong footwear, a hi-viz jacket or bright clothing, gardening/rubber gloves and litter pickers if you have them. We have plenty of bags. Children welcome to participate with parents.

Saturday October 15th at 10 am, station tidy up. Meet at Eastrington Station with spades/forks/trowels/gardening gloves to weed and tidy the station and plant more bulbs. Wear strong shoes and suitable clothes for weather. Children must be supervised at all times.

Tuesday 25th October at 7.30 pm, next PUE meeting to plan winter activities (bulb planting, making wreaths, Christmas crafts, help with village celebrations).

Everyone is welcome to our meetings and to volunteer in whatever way they can - from watering a flower tub to planting a tree.

Bad Smells!

You may have experienced a particularly vile smell over the past few days and may have put it down to normal spreading but it wasn't. The smell is caused by a local Farm moving tractor loads of their 'compost' from one field to another.
Please call the Environment Agency on 0800 80 70 60 to report any bad smell and let's work together to put a stop to this.
It's important that as many calls are made as possible - don't just leave it to a neighbour - make that call!

Today’s the day that Emley Moor transmitter and its 50 relays (known as a transmitter group) start the switch to digital - BBC2 analogue signal will be switched off today.

This means that:
· If you haven’t switched, you’ll lose BBC Two
· The time of day you switch will depend on which relay transmitter you are watching
· If you have Freeview, BT Vision or Top Up TV you’ll need to re-tune your equipment

At stage two on Weds 21 September all the remaining analogue channels will switch to digital and the remaining digital channels will become available.

This means that:
· If you haven’t switched to digital, you will lose your TV service
· The time of day you switch will depend on which relay transmitter you are watching
· If you have Freeview, BT Vision or Top Up TV you’ll need to re-tune your equipment again

Thanks to the generosity of fellow Eastringtonians , "Pretty Up Eastrington" can now offer locally made jams and chutneys.

All profits will go towards making Eastrington look more beautiful - currently we are on target to finish the four entrance signs to the village this autumn. We are also funding a new set of community noticeboards for the village for this autumn. We are planting raised beds, borders, hanging baskets and tubs for winter colour, bulbs for next spring, and we extend a warm welcome to volunteers at our regular monthly litter picks.

World Food Day’ - August 28

The next ‘World Food Day’ will take place on Sunday 28th August.

It will be open from 10.00am to 5.00pm and will run in conjunction with the Courtyard Farmers Market which is open from 9.00 till 1.00.

The ‘World Food Café’ menu will also feature food from Venezuela, Brazil, Portugal, Poland, Latvia, as well as, some our home grown favourites.

Linda Thornton, Manager of Goole Courtyard explained that the World Food Café is an exciting idea to promote the vibrancy of different cultures now living in the Goole area. Over the past few years Goole has changed and people from across the world have come here to work. Some families have decided that Goole is a place where they would like to settle and that is now happening.

There have been a few smaller events organised in the town where local people have prepared their specialised dishes, we thought it would be a great idea to combine these with some of our own and make them available on a regular basis. We have now developed a menu that has not been seen anywhere in East Yorkshire before.

The World Food Café is also about providing value for money. Food will be reasonably priced and will mean that families will be able to come and enjoy a meal together.

Linda is hoping that the World Food Café can become a regular feature in the Goole calendar. She also has other plans including developing a ‘World Food Café’ social enterprise business, where the concept can be hired for parties or events across the East Riding and beyond. Linda feels really strongly about embracing the opportunities of the new cultures living in Goole and there is no better way of doing that than through people’s stomachs.

All meals will cost less than £3.00 for adults and £1 for children.

Perseid Meteor Shower Peaks August 13th, 2011

Every year in early August, we can observe the Perseid meteor shower (“the Perseids”), and it’s a fascinating sky event.

This year 2011, the Perseid peak activity is expected on Saturday 13th 2011. Unfortunately, there is a full Moon on the same day and this will make observing difficult (but not impossible, so don’t give in until next year!)

Open Garden Weekend

Pretty Up Eastrington's big fundraiser this year was a weekend Open Gardens event on 25-26th June. It was the first time Eastrington has ever hosted an Open Garden event, and until the weekend itself we had no idea how popular it would turn out, either with host gardeners or with visitors.

A total of 10 hosts very kindly offered to open their garden gates to visitors, not only neighbours and visiting family, but gardening fans from other parts of the East Riding, from Bradford, Holmfirth and even beyond the borders! The village hall was open for the usual refreshments and facilities, plant and craft sales, a cool and quiet retreat from the hot sun. The main attractions however were the gardens themselves – in a variety of styles from traditional cottage gardens to modern family-friendly plots, and all in top form only a week after the Village Show. Gardens with ponds and wildlife were popular with children , while the grown-ups enjoyed the unusual plants, healthy vegetables, sharing tips and browsing among the cuttings and plants offered for sale. Most of the gardens also offered shady spots and more refreshments for visitors to recover from the heat.

Altogether we had nearly 90 visitors over the weekend, more than half being from Eastrington itself or visiting friends and family. The host gardeners had a busy but entertaining time showing off their skills, and visitors from neighbouring villages also commented on how inspired they were with the "prettying up approach" to Eastrington and went away full of ideas and enthusiasm for their own village.

The event was not only a fun and friendly way to spend a day in the sunshine, meeting like-minded gardeners and catching up with friends and neighbours, but it also raised over £500 towards Pretty Up Eastrington projects.

Playing Field News

Yorkshire Water
Yorkshire Water have completed their work in the playing field and the only remaining evidence of their presence is the control kiosk. We are grateful to both Yorkshire Water and their contractors, Bentleys, for their helpful approach throughout this project, keeping any inconvenience to a minimum and leaving the field in such good a good state.
One benefit of YW putting their flood relief tanks in the playing field is that “compensation” will be paid. This can be used on improvements to the playing field for the benefit of the whole village. If anyone has any suggestions on how the money should be spent, they should provide details to the playing field Secretary, Rachel Kay (410464). The current favourite is to improve the car park.

New Scorebox
Villagers will have noticed that the old wooden cricket scorebox has been replaced by a spanking new brick built one. This has been built to complement the village hall and is certainly a great improvement. It also provides much needed extra storage space.

Trustees and Committee Members
Are you interested in doing something for the benefit of the local community? Volunteers are needed to become trustees or join the committee and if you are interested you should contact Rachel Kay. The positions need not be too time consuming, with meetings held only two or three times a year.

A note from our new Vicar

Polly and Pete meet again.

Polly and Pete were having another one of their secret meetings after the Sunday service. They had met at the base of the darkened church tower so as not to be seen. They both had to very careful not to be seen by a soul. Pete asked, as was his usual practise each Sunday; “how is your father Poll and what’s he been up to this week?” Polly, the vicars daughter replied, as she did on most Sundays; “I’m not sure, I don’t think he’s done much, he seems to spend all his time standing about talking to God!”

Now Polly’s father, the vicar despised Pete. He already had a girlfriend, Mini, what was this fascination with his daughter all about? Pete though felt that he was a long time faithful servant at St Triumph’s. The only church in the diocese named in honour of the saviour of British motorcyclists and gentleman of a certain age given to growing long beards and with a liking for cars which were like them, perhaps a little past their best!! Pete was very proud of his contribution to church life in the parish, on the ground as his bishop always described it! His favourite task was clearing up; he took a special pride in that. Always after a coffee and biscuits which followed the Sunday service no matter how hard Mrs Bigbrush tried Pete could find a little she had missed and took great pleasure in dealing with it.

Well, that was Pete’s good point. The problem was, the reason he’d never really been accepted in church, the real reason the vicar found his presence so troublesome was that Pete never new when to keep out the way. He had this habit of showing up where he wasn’t wanted and causing a fuss, especially amongst the ladies some of them were new to the village and weren’t really used to gentlemen like Pete. Weddings were one of his favourites, he loved nothing more than making a bride scream! Oh, and havoc he could cause at a baptism with his frantic dashing around the church. There was of course the time when Pete had damaged the electrics too, very expensive that, it was going to take time and effort to win back the community’s friendship after that.

Pete, of course is the long serving church mouse. Are these characters real you may well ask. St Triumph’s I must admit is purely a product of my dreams! I do know a couple of Pollys though and I’m sure most our churches have got a Pete or two!

Polly does though remind us of two things. No-one is ever quite sure what the vicar is doing. In my house that usually includes the vicar! More importantly though is that vicar is predominantly there for God. For me, to be there for God means equally to be there for God’s people. That is each and everyone of us, made in the image of God, to discover life and life in its fullness which is God’s will for each human being that inhabits the earth. Perhaps the saintly former Archbishop, Michael Ramsey was as near to the truth as we can get when he wrote that priest faces God with the people on his heart and faces the people with God on his tongue.

So, I very much look forward to beginning to get to know you all over the summer. During the meanwhile allow me to wish you all a pleasant summer, a good holiday for those going away. Whatever you’re up to may God bless you.

PRETTY UP EASTRINGTON MEETING July 11

Actions from previous meetings

School/village planters: Caroline has not been able to get this promise redeemed. Action carried over. Jane has thanked Pete Bridle. All future container planting should be drought-resistant plants like lavender.

Pond: Gina, with the help of one of the Lifestyle teams (Sophie, Lauren and Hannah) have cleared and tidied the village pond and painted Duckingham Palace. Patrick dug a drainage trench. The pond needs dredging while it’s dry.
ACTION: Barbara to ask Dave Wilcox to help to dredge the dry end – Gina to supervise the operation.

Village Trees: no further action.

A-Boards: Barbara purchased 2 A boards for village use – cost £69.50 (including p&p) paid from PUE funds. The boards are stored at the village hall. Barbara is storing the paper.

Dropbox: Jane, Caroline and Barbara are now able to use this. Barbara will manage the folders and invited all to send pictures, fliers, information etc to her to place on Dropbox for future use.

Signs update: the first two (Howden Road and Portington Road) are up, signed and planted and look very good. Gina has asked Alex Wells of Highways to inspect and sign off, then the previous sign supports can be removed. The other two signs will be completed when the college term recommences. Gina will let us know when she is ready for a public opening, to which all contributors, donors and sponsors will be invited. Gina was thanked for her work in coordinating the construction work.

Greenhouse: Gina has done an end-of-term clean –up. Alison Kitching has offered her help during school holidays. Gina is still looking for a volunteer to lead garden based sessions at school and will contact the new head. She also needs help with the wildlife garden. Alison Kitching has offered her help during school holidays.

AGENDA

Treasurer’s Update:
Jill Cole has handed back the Treasurer’s role and the books. It was agreed that Caroline will act as interim treasurer, and Bev will act as interim chair until elections can take place. Caroline will get a mandate to add Bev’s signature for the cheque book, replacing Jill. Jane will write to Jill to thank her for her work.

According to the books, PUE currently appears to have about £2800 in the bank, which includes the money raised by Jill at the Kilpin, and £545 profit from the Open Gardens event. A full account will be presented at the next meeting. It was agreed that PUE should pay up to £1000 towards a village notice board (to be used by the parish council, village hall and other village groups). The full amount will be paid on completion and delivery of the notice board within a reasonable period of time.

Litter picks:
Next one is 14th August. It was agreed that Lifestyler children would be very welcome to take part as long as there was one responsible adult per two children to supervise. Children should not be expected to attend a litter pick for more than 20 minutes.

Open Gardens: this event was regarded as a success, raising £545 profit, and will be organised again next year.

Station planting: The station needs a tidy up – Caroline will try and get a boys’ Lifestyle team to help during the holidays.

Scarecrow Festival: this will take place on 1-2 October. The theme is “Historical Characters”. Caroline will liaise with Jenny to PUE/Lifestyle help – possibly making extra scarecrows.

AOB: Barbara and Bev will be doing more raised beds along verges – consulting with neighbours and encouraging them to “adopt” the beds.
Barbara and Caroline will make a trip to Leeds to purchase autumn bedding plants to refresh the planting.

Bev suggested purchasing a marquee for use not only by PUE but to rent out. She and Bev will investigate how this might work in practice (storage, insurance, setting up/taking down work)

Francoise will look into acquiring one or more banners to advertise village events.

Panto 2011

This year’s Pantomime script has been written especially for Eastrington Players and the performance dates have been arranged for the 8th, 9th & 10th December 2011.

A meeting is being held at 7.30pm on the 17th August at Eastrington village hall for all members of Eastrington Players to discuss this year’s production.

1. Priority

Issue: - Anti-social behaviour on Scalby Lane/Hansard Drive, Gilberdyke

Action: - Following complaints of Anti-social behaviour the NPT team are actively working to reduce incidents of this nature in order to improve the quality of life for the residents of Gilberdyke.
Anyone witnessing anti-social behaviour is asked to call in with details. Howdenshire Neighbourhood Policing team will aim to respond to all calls for service in relation to this priority. Any incidents that are not attended will be investigated and followed up by the team.

Positive action will be taken against anyone engaging in anti-social behaviour.
East Riding of Yorkshire council anti-social behaviour team also investigate reports of anti-social behaviour the 2 teams will be working together along with other agencies to target the issue.

Officers from the NPT have concentrated their patrols in this area and will continue to do so. Anyone who acts in a disorderly manner can expect to be dealt with firmly. Our patrols will include the use of arrest powers and the consideration of the use of £80 penalty notices for disorder to anyone causing nuisance at these sites. Issue: - Anti-social behaviour and under age drinking, Holme-on-Spalding Moor.

Following complaints of under age drinking in various locations in Holme-on-Spalding Moor, the Neighbourhood Policing Team will continue to regularly check hotspot areas during June. Those who are underage and are either found in possession of, or in groups with, alcohol will receive parental letters and anyone found supplying alcohol to under age young people will be subject of a £80 Penalty Notice. Regular checks have been made during May with a small amount of alcohol seized and several youths warned. These patrols will continue throughout June.

4. Offenders brought to justice

On the 5th of June 2011 officers attended an address on Clayton’s Fold, Gilberdyke. Whilst at the address officer discovered the occupant was cultivating cannabis. Enquires are now ongoing.

On Wednesday the 15th of June 2011 a report was received that a local male had jumped out of bushes and chased a young girl. The male was alleged to have attempted to retrieve a knife from his sock whilst doing so. The male was arrested for affray. The male has since been bailed pending further enquires.

On Friday the 24th of June 2011 two males were arrested in the Newport/Gilberdyke area. This followed an attempt theft of diesel from HGV’s. The males were disturbed by a passing police patrol that was on proactive patrol. The males were arrested and bailed pending further enquires.

5. Meetings

You are invited to attend any of the below meetings:

Police Surgery. Means: an opportunity for you to meet privately with a member of the neighbourhood team to discuss any policing issue of concern. This is a drop-in event so you may have to wait a few minutes.

Police and Communities Together Meeting . This is a public meeting where the police and other public authority representatives will be present. Its main purpose is to determine what the local priorities for action over the next three moths will be. It gives members of the public an opportunity to raise their concerns and influence those decisions.

Street Briefing. This means that the whole neighbourhood team will be briefed on current problems in the area and tasked to deal with them. The public can meet with the officers and be informed about how they can help with these issues.

Summertime Shed Security

Have you got a garden shed? Is it one of those which is immaculately kept with everything in its place or is it, like mine, a dumping ground for the kids' toys and bikes. Let's consider our sheds for a moment. Think of all the valuable items inside: lawnmowers, strimmers, tools, bikes, the list can be endless. We put loads of valuable gear into our sheds, but just how secure do we make them when we've done this? The spring often heralds a time when we see an increase in the thefts of items from sheds right across the county. Burglary of garden sheds and the theft of garden equipment is one of the fastest growing crimes in the country. Our garden furniture and tools are very saleable items, so we all need to make things as difficult as possible for any would be thief to get to our property. So, what can we do?
Well, begin by thinking "If I lost my keys, how would I get into my shed?" This is always a good starting point.
- Check the general fabric of your shed. Are bits of it dropping off? Could a thief take advantage of this? And what about the locks? Are they decent ones or "cheap and nasty ones" that a child of five could break open?

- Always make sure you've got decent locks. Another good idea is to ensure that outside door hinges should be secured with coach bolts. That way, no-one can unscrew the hinges.

- What about the windows? Are the frames up to standard or are they rotting away? Consider putting a grille inside your windows or fastening a clear Perspex sheet behind it. You could even put up a bit of net curtain to stop people being able to see what you have inside. That way, your shed doesn't become a shop window to a potential thief.

- Remember to chain up your valuable items inside the shed. For example, if you chain all your bikes together through the frames, this makes things difficult for a thief! They're opportunists and they want to be away as quick as possible!

- Postcode your property, preferably visibly with paint or a marker pen. Tools look all the same unless they're individually marked.

-Photograph all valuable items. This includes garden ornaments and urns, particularly if they are unique.

- Consider a shed alarm. They're inexpensive, incredibly loud and draw attention to your shed if anyone's tampering with it.

- And always remember to put everything away and to lock up your shed on a night!

We can all deter the thief by making things as difficult as possible for them. The same is true with the outside of your home in summer. Here are a few general hints which are worth bearing in mind:

1. Ensure that your garden fences and walls are in a good state of repair

2. Consider installing outside lighting. Low energy dusk to dawn lights are very good.

3. Keep trees and shrubs trimmed so that potential thieves can't use them to hide behind on your property

4. Consider using prickly plants such as berberis in appropriate places to act as a physical barrier.

5. When you're out in your garden, ensure your house is secure. Sneak in burglars can advantage otherwise.

And finally, please report suspicious people or vehicles to the Police on 0845 60 60 222 (999 in an emergency if a crime is occurring). You could prevent a crime and a great deal of heartache to someone.

Hook In Bloom - Judging day

"What a magnificent Beech Tree, it must be the largest specimen in the country!", exclaimed the visitors when invited to view St Mary’s Church in Hook.

As part of their tour of Hook Village the Yorkshire in Bloom judges were enthusiastic about so many aspects of village life. Community spirit at its best with all organisations working together to give quality of life for all ages was just one of the positive comments received.

Despite the weather, the judges were impressed with the variety of gardening and insisted that the gardens shone, the best displays seen this year.

Despite having a leg in plaster, Amber, a pupil at Hook Primary school stayed behind after school, along with some of her fellow students, to greet the judges and explain what was growing in the school garden So impressed were the judges that they have suggested that Hook School enter the Yorkshire in Bloom competition in their own right . Yorkshire in Bloom Results are released on Tuesday 20th September at the Award ceremony in Harrogate! Keep your Fingers crossed for us!

Litter pick - July 2011

Thanks to the young Lifestyle team, Emma, Beth, Lauren and Charlie for braving the showers and taking part in this afternoon's litter pick - Howden Road, Station Road and around the village pond were cleared this afternoon. It really makes a difference to have so many pairs of eyes and helping hands.
The next litter pick will be in a month's time on August 14th at 4 pm. We meet at the Black Swan car park. Please wear suitable clothes for the weather (including strong shoes or boots) and bring gardening gloves and litter sticks if you have them. We have loads of bags to fill.
The Lifestyle team are looking for more ways to raise money for Cancer Relief during the summer holidays - if you have any ideas, or perhaps you'd like a car cleaned or your drive weeded pass the message on.

Trevor Nicholson is a modest man but his garden is a little grander than most. The backdrop to his ‘patch’ is the breathtaking neoclassical facade of Harewood, one of the ten Treasure Houses of England. Trevor is Head Gardener, overseeing the dazzling range of gardens at Harewood. He arrived at the estate in 1994 as a senior gardener, charged with establishing the newly renovated Terrace Garden. His work caught the eye of the 7th Earl of Harewood and a year later, promotion followed. In 2008, he was named ‘Professional Gardener Of The Year’ by the leading magazine, Horticulture Week. Trevor will be taking a short break from his busy schedule to give an illustrated presentation on the Gardens of Harewood at the next meeting of Howden & District U3A which is to be held at the Shire Hall, Howden at 10.30 a.m. on 28th July.

Harewood boasts over 100 acres of grounds, with gardens which are full of variety and contain plants from all over the world; all this in the magnificent landscape created by Lancelot ‘Capability’ Brown. Visitors can enjoy walks through gardens such as the Lakeside Garden, the Walled Garden and the Bird Garden. In 2009, Harewood’s Himalayan Garden was officially opened by Alan Titchmarsh. Set amidst the beautiful scenery of the lake and cascade, this sunken glade with its surrounding woodland garden, is home to over six hundred types of plants and over fifty species of Rhododendron. Trevor and his team spent almost ten years meticulously renovating and restocking this stunning mini-landscape of Sino-Himalayan plants. Alan Titchmarsh spoke of “his highest respect for Trevor’s specialist knowledge” and described the garden as “a hidden gem, second to none in the UK”.

PUE Open Gardens - update & thankyou

Dear Supporters of Pretty Up Eastrington

We've just had a really successful weekend Open Gardens event. It's the first time Eastrington has hosted an Open Garden event, and 10 hosts very kindly offered to open their garden gates to visitors, not only neighbours and visiting family, but visitors from other parts of the East Riding, Bradford, Holmfirth and even beyond the borders! The event was not only a fun and friendly way to spend a day in the sunshine, but has raised over £400 towards Pretty Up Eastrington projects. Come to our next meeting on Wednesday 27th July 7.30 pm at the village hall to have a say in how to spend it.
Visitors from neighbouring villages also commented on how inspired they were with the "prettying up approach" to Eastrington and went away full of ideas and enthusiasm for their own village.

Hook Open gardens - update

What a fabulous day we've had at Hook Open Gardens the weather was gorgeous and with the support of Hook WI and Hook Scouts we raised a magnificent sum of £375. 73 people visited the 15 gardens including St Mary's Church!
Cream Teas and ice lollies were enjoyed in one of the gardens, visitors came far and wide from Bradford to Hornsea and Epworth to Pocklington! Very positive comments were received regarding the lovley assortment of gardens large and small including the summer bedding displays around the village.
Many Thanks to all garden holders who opened their gardens and to all the volunteers who gave their time Hook WI, Hook Scouts whether it was baking, selling the brochures donating tombola prizes or just supporting us. Several visitors commented on definitely returning next time!!! so if you'd like to join us and live in Hook watch this space for the next Hook Open Gardens!! www.hookinbloom.co.uk

Goole young filmmakers get London premiere

Two young directors from Goole, who recently took part in a film-making project at Junction, have been selected to have their films premiered at a high profile screening at the Institute for Contemporary Arts in London. They were selected from hundreds of applicants for the London Screening of Straight8 - a film competition like no other, in which entrants are provided with 8mm film and only get one shot at capturing their short movie. There is no opportunity to edit what has been filmed, and the first time the filmmakers see their work will be at the premiere at the ICA on The Mall in London. Each applicant sends their unprocessed reel of film to the festival, who then develop it, view it and make their selections. Due to the tough challenge of making the film, it is usually experienced film-makers and degree-level film students that enter their work – it is very rare that young people get such an opportunity to have their work shown at this level. Goole Straight8 was a project that made three films to enter, and two of these films have been selected from hundreds to be screened with around thirty others in London on Monday 25 July.

Straight8 Festival organiser Will Cummock said ‘Straight 8 is a tough challenge for any filmmaker, so it's fantastic to see young people taking it on so successfully. 2011 has been one of our most competitive years to date so the standard of selected films is particularly high.’

Harvey Griffin (aged 14) who directed a short film entitled Going Up also featured young crew members and young actors from Goole. Harvey is pleased to have been selected for the screening and is looking forward to seeing his film for the first time.

Hannah Turner (aged 12) made her first film aged 7. Her film Man from the Moon features animation and again used young cast and crew from Goole. Hannah is ecstatic to have been selected for the London screening and hopes this could be the first of many premieres in the capital.

Nicola Dixon Youth and Community Arts Co-ordinator at Junction said ‘We are immensely proud of what these young people have achieved; they really put so much hard work into the planning and creativity in these films. I’m so pleased that they have been chosen to premiere in London, a great opportunity for 2 teenagers from Goole to showcase the fantastic talents the youth of Goole has to offer.’

Goole Straight8 project was a 6 month film project for young people held at Junction, led by professional film-maker David Bunting of Duchy Parade Films. David says ‘I’m so pleased for the young people, this is a hard film competition – there is no young people’s category, no special favours because they are young people – their films have been chosen on merit alone. Well done to all involved’

Goole Straight8 was made possible by a grant from Screen Yorkshire and UK film Council through the Regional Investment Fund for England. Jay Arnold, Head of Cultural Sector Development at Screen Yorkshire says 'Screen Yorkshire is delighted to congratulate Hannah and Harvey on their success and very proud to have been able to support Goole Straight8. To get through to this stage in an international filmmaking competition is a fantastic achievement and testament to the team at Junction who work incredibly hard to ensure that young people in Goole have access to such life shaping opportunities.'

The films will have a Goole premiere at Junction during August.

Survey - Social Impact of Humber Bridge Tolls

The Government has announced the second phase of the Humber Bridge Review, which is mainly looking at options for repaying the Humber Bridge debt. One of its Terms of Reference is to “ensure the Review considers the views of the local community, business leaders, local councils the Bridge Board and local MPs.”

A lot of work has been done on the economic impact of Humber Bridge tolls on business, but very little to show the effects on people’s daily lives. NBF has been commissioned to carry out a piece of work looking at the local social impact of the current toll system.
NBF has developed a short survey to help gather that evidence and, whether you use the Humber Bridge regularly or only occasionally, we hope you have five minutes to complete it and tell us your views.
The survey closes at 5pm on 1st July 2011.

As Junction’s summer season of live events will draw to a close over the next couple of weeks, making way for a series of summer films, until the live programme returns for autumn. As the season winds down, Junction will be welcoming The No1 Ladies Accordian Orchestra, who will be performing at the venue on Saturday 25th June. This impressive and sizeable band has been put together by Karen Tweed - the mercurial, wacky and elegant English accordion queen, known for her inspirational teaching and ground breaking collaborations.

Since deciding to pursue a musical career in the late 1980s, Karen has risen to become one of the leading lights on the UK and international folk scenes, working with, amongst others, Kathryn Tickell, The Poozies, Swap, Two Duos Quartet and May Monday.

Her latest adventure is The No 1 ladies Accordion Orchestra, a fountain of fabulous female accordionists, presenting arrangements that cascade effortlessly from Piazzola to polkas; Stevie Wonder to Wish Me Luck as you Wave Me Goodbye; musettes and swing waltzes to tango.

This stunning new orchestra brings together accordion gals from all around the UK with a shifting line-up of up to 16 performers as well as showcases by smaller ensembles and soloists. It’s an orchestra the likes of which has never been seen or heard before, promising fun, frocks and musical frolics!

The LAO also has a fund-raising element supporting various charities including Teenage Cancer Trust, Fosbrooks and St Rocks Youth Music Groups, Ashokan Music Camps, Overstrand Accordion Bank.

The longest total lunar eclipse since July 2000 will occur on Wednesday (June 15) - its the first lunar eclipse of 2011 and one of two total lunar eclipses this year. The eclipse, which will occur during June's full moon, will begin at 1:24 p.m. EDT (1724 GMT) and last until 7 p.m. EDT (2300 GMT).

For observers in regions where it will be visible, the eclipse could offer an amazing sight: the period of totality will be 100 minutes.

Village Signs Progress

Just an update on the very busy weekend as we get to the end of the village signs project which so many of us have been involved with.
Saturday – Darren Cole drives to Sheffield and picks up 2 ton of special mortar to match the handmade bricks. Dave Wilcox’s lad drives JCB from Goole to unload. Gina and Darren meet him.
(Dave has been in hospital for 10 days and is doing this from his hospital bed!! – we all wish him well with a speedy recovery )

Darren picks up cement from Kennings – Gina and Richard meet him at Dave’s yard to unload .
Sunday – Darren ,Gina , Stuart Dixon , Pip Watson & Patrick Scargill meet Paul Robinson in Gilberdyke for the first shift and move 1000 bricks by hand and restack at Dave’s yard. Thanks Paul for the free bricks and thank you Dave for the storage. We then need a second shift Darren, Gina, Stuart Dixon and Richard Harrison, yet another 2 hours and another 1000 bricks stacked up at Dave’s yard.
Monday – Darren is to meet with Bishop Burton manager to discuss the project.
Tuesday – work starts, Gina to meet the Bishop Burton team to show them where everything is and start the job.
Thank you to everyone that has been involved time, money, effort and knowledge, it’s a real team effort and I hope we can all enjoy the result.

THE UGLY DUCKLING at JUNCTION

On Saturday 18th June 2011, Sea Legs Puppet Theatre will bring their adorable retelling of The Ugly Duckling to Junction in Goole. This new musical has been adapted from the book of the same name by this established and experienced touring company.

Rob Ashman founded Sea Legs Puppet Theatre in January 2001 to produce high quality children’s puppet theatre. With a dedicated input from a growing number of highly skilled artists, each show is lovingly crafted into an innovative and fun experience. More than anything Rob prides himself on the fact that even the most low-key performance is given the correct energy and focus to make it a truly magical experience.

Says Rob: ‘None of this would be possible without the incredible enthusiasm of the children and adults who are Sea Legs’ audience. I am constantly thrilled at [their] willingness to suspend [their] disbelief and enter into the magic’.

Based on the classic story by Hans Christian Anderson, The Ugly Duckling has been adapted into a stage musical, with puppets, by Rob Ashman & Matthew Hart. Set on the banks of a magical river, brilliant storytelling, fantastic puppets and a delightful new musical score make this a must see show for little ones and their families. Audiences will meet a host of colourful characters in this heart-warming tale of adventure.

In addition there will also be an arts and crafts workshop from 11am until 1pm, in which children can make their own duckling or swan puppets to take into the show. Tickets for the workshop are £4, with a combined show + workshop ticket at £7. Contact the box office for details.

Pierre Bensusan is a fine contender for the title "greatest musician you've never heard". Over a 35 year career which has taken him to every corner of the globe, his unique style has developed on his own terms, never being diluted by the pressure to conform. His latest release "Vividly", combines exquisite solo guitar pieces with an equal number of passionate vocal performances.

Bensusan's music was described by the UK's Melody Maker as having "the easy inevitability of true genius" - a label with which legions of passionate fans are only too quick to concur. Indeed, Bensusan is the kind of artist who, like an initiation to a secretive society, many fans discover through a personal and reverent introduction from a friend or family member.

Despite his relative obscurity within mainstream music, Pierre is a highly regarded and influential musician. UK folk legend Davy Graham (sighted by most as the inventor of the DADGAD guitar tuning also employed by Bensusan) on meeting Pierre said "Now that Pierre is here, I no longer need to play guitar!" Australian guitar legend Michael Hedges wrote a piece titled "Bensusan" in dedication to his admiration of Pierre's work.

Please see information below regarding a MEDiBUS service which will soon be operating in the Goole area. Please could you circulate the details to your group members, who may be interested in using the service.

From Thursday 2 June, a MEDiBUS will operate Tuesdays and Thursdays in the Goole area to Scunthorpe Hospital. Residents of Goole and surrounding parishes can use the service for appointments and daytime visiting at Scunthorpe Hospital. Journeys must be pre-booked no later than 2pm on the day before you wish to travel.

MEDiBUS is wheelchair accessible.

Local company Drunken Chorus will be returning to Junction on Saturday 28th May to perform their latest show, AND HELL FOLLOWED WITH THEM - a haunting piece of theatre, exploring the tension and suspense of the horror genre. The performance merges nightmarish visions with grotesque movement and gallows humour, as Drunken Chorus descend into a dark and disturbing world of fear and violence. It is a performance that explores our perceptions of horror; a performance full of darkness and silence; a performance that lies always in the shadow of some horrific act.

Drunken Chorus are a local performance company, established in 2006 by Goole-based artists Chris Williams and Emma Buck. After a number of two-hander shows with Emma, Chris went on to make a one-man-show about the death of the double-act, and about the loneliness of the solo performer. The show, what do you think of it so far?, toured extensively around the UK in 2009-2010, in Edinburgh, Ipswich, Liverpool, Lancaster, Manchester, Hull, London, Halifax , Nottingham and York, with a performance in Goole as part of Junction’s first ever season. For the new show, which was inspired by an obsession with horror movies, Chris teamed up with Manchester-based artist Nicki Hobday (Trace Theatre, Proto-Type Theater, Until Thursday), and Canadian performer David McBride (Proto-Type Theater). Drunken Chorus have also collaborated with composer Steve Kilpatrick, who has created the soundtrack for the show.

The Goole gig is the final date on the tour, and will mark the end of the year long project. The show, which explores the rhythms and structures of the horror genre, has been funded twice by Arts Council England (once for research and development, and again for touring). Says Chris Williams: ‘This was the first time we’d applied to Arts Council England – we wanted to be sure we were ready for it before we made our first proposal. We were over the moon to receive the funding, especially in a time of cut-backs.’

Drunken Chorus began making the work at the start of 2010, with early support from Testing Grounds – an artist development agency that enables emerging companies to take risks and try out new ideas. Following some early experiments, the company’s artistic director, Chris Williams, decided to develop the project into a full length touring theatre production. After successfully applying for Arts Council funding, the company went on to secure the support of The Nuffield Theatre in Lancaster, Junction in Goole and LANWest. Work-in-progress versions of the show were performed at Proto-Type Theater’s Sunday Lunch Club, and China Plate’s Pilot, both of which are events for developing promising new talent in theatre and live-art.

The show premiered back in February at the Nuffield Theatre, who also co-produced the show. It was also performed at The Wickham Theatre in Bristol, Northern Ballet in Leeds and Greenroom n Manchester.

Junction has been a valuable supporter of Drunken Chorus and this new show, with the company taking up residency at the venue for rehearsals in summer 2010. Whilst working at Junction, Drunken Chorus also collaborated with participants of Electric Youth Theatre, who worked with artists from the company to explore new ways of making work.

The show also has an original soundtrack by Steve Kilpatrick, which was specially commissioned by Drunken Chorus. Says Chris Williams, local performer, and artistic director of the company: ‘The collaboration with Steve Kilpatrick has been a huge success – his soundtrack really captures something of the essence of horror, and there are a few unexpected peaks in sound that have had people jumping out of their seats!’

The show in Goole will be the last ever performance of AND HELL FOLLOWED…, after which Drunken Chorus will set to work on their new project – All Ancient Seas and Dark Wells. This new show, inspired by the ephemeral nature of underground jazz clubs, will preview at FLARE International Festival of New Theatre in Manchester in July, with the world premiere taking place at Kulturhuset in Stockholm, Sweden at the end of August. The show will be co-produced by The Nuffield Theatre, and will see director Chris Williams continuing his collaboration with Nicki Hobday, who will also be performing in AND HELL FOLLOWED WITH THEM at Junction on 28th May. Throughout this forthcoming project, the company will also continue their relationship with Junction, and with Electric Youth Theatre, and will once again be applying for support from Arts Council England.

Says Chris Williams: ‘This is a very exciting time for us. In the last twelve months or so we’ve gone from strength to strength, and our first few years of hard work are really beginning to pay off. We can’t wait to perform at Junction on 28th May, and hopefully to return to the venue with the new show some time in the future.’

On Saturday 21st May, Junction will play host to the immensely talented acoustic guitarist, Pete Smith. Over thirty years playing experience has made Pete an extremely versatile and accomplished musician. Jazz, Blues, Folk, Ragtime, Calypso, Baroque and Bluegrass all get treated to his blistering finger-style technique and become playgrounds for his lightening improvisational skills.
Rated as one of the UK`s finest acoustic guitarists he has gained a national reputation not only as a phenomenal player but also as a teacher and story teller. Regularly receiving standing ovations at top Jazz, Blues and Folk Festivals, few musicians appeal to such a wide audience which is testament not only to his outstanding musicianship but also for being genuinely entertaining.

Since rediscovering his love of the acoustic guitar in 1999 he has gained international recognition for his unique arrangements and dazzling playing and in 2005 was hand picked by Bob Taylor himself to represent Taylor Guitars in the UK.
In 2008 Pete became UK Clinician for Larrivee Guitars and in 2009 joined Headway Music Audio as guitar product specialist, he can be seen giving concerts, product demonstrations and holding guitar clinics regularly throughout Britain, Europe and the USA.

PETE’S HISTORY:
‘I started playing the guitar around the age of thirteen, I remember the guitar was a steel stringed acoustic which my grandmother bought for me from the local secondhand shop, it had a metal tail piece and a playing action that was nothing short of torturous but I persevered with it and she eventually bought me a “real” guitar for my fourteenth birthday.

Those heady years in the early 1970`s were spent getting stoned, listening to all kinds of music and practicing day and night... much to the annoyance of my family and neighbours, however, my life changed when I heard “Sky in my Pie” by John James and Pete Berryman, just two guys playing together on two acoustic guitars but what a sound, I instantly fell in love with it and it has stayed with me ever since.
I soon discovered Stefan Grossman`s Kicking Mule label and I spent countless hours poring over tablature and learning country blues, old time picking and the classic ragtime of Scott Joplin.

It was also about this time I discovered the English school of folk guitarists such as Nic Jones, Martin Carthy, John Renbourn and later Gordon Giltrap. I loved the way they adapted the American finger style to traditional British folk tunes and in so doing created a whole new genre of guitar playing.

At the time I was still playing with Rock and Blues bands but I started to do some solo gigs and although I couldn’t (and still can’t) sing I aped Arlo Guthrie`s “Alice’s Restaurant” and told shaggy dog stories whilst playing ragtime, I`d always loved making people laugh and it seemed a logical thing for me to mix the two.

The 1980`s saw me get itchy feet and I went off traveling around the free festivals, I moved to Scotland in 1985 where I started to study the guitar seriously and, quite by accident discovered jazz. The dark winter days were spent trying to figure out the bewildering finger styles of Joe Pass and Martin Taylor and by night I was out trying to earn a crust playing Rock n` Roll and Country music in order to feed my growing family.

Moving South again and finally settling in the Midlands, I started to get calls for session work and eventually fell into a routine of performing and recording both solo and with a wide variety of singers and bands ranging from jazz fusion to traditional folk music, all of which I’ve enjoyed and learnt from and I believe it’s having played such a variety of styles that has made me the musician I am today.

I also began teaching in secondary schools and colleges eventually becoming guitar tutor for Access to Music at Broxtowe College.

I`d always had a hankering to put together my own instrumental acoustic guitar duo and finally achieved this in 1999, the duo proved successful and in 2005 resulted in our being chosen by Bob Taylor himself to represent Taylor Guitars here in the UK. Although we recorded only one CD together we did countless gigs and earned some great reviews.’

ROYAL WEDDING TEA PARTY

Dear Eastringtonians.

I hope you all enjoyed our Royal Wedding Tea Party on Friday 29th April - nearly as memorable as the real Royal Wedding!

As well as the inventive and delicious cakes made by the legendary bakers in Eastrington, we had home made savouries and sandwiches, gallons of tea and plenty of beer, wine, and jugs of Pimms to toast the happy couple.

We also had fantastic live entertainment on the piano from Laurie Broadbent, a super raffle (thanks especially to Sno!Zone at Xscape and Howden Joinery for their star prizes), the traditional tombola, prizes for the best outfits, and a competition to win the beautiful woolly princess Fleur, knitted for us by Elaine.

Outdoors we had a free bouncy castle (sponsored by Gina and Richard), and there were games organised by Tom Turner of Howden Scouts, who also won the star prize in the raffle, a microwave oven, to grace the scout hut kitchen.

David Linford came along and took a superb set of photos (we are a photogenic lot in Eastrington!) and offers us prints at special offer rate of £6 for an 8'x6' size, with £2 from each sale to be ploughed back into the Village Hall funds. Take a look at his work on this website:

As well as providing tea and entertainment to residents, family and friends of Eastrington, we raised more than £470, which will go towards improving the village hall's facilities.

An event like this involves dozens of people behind and in front of the scenes to plan, prepare, fundraise, provide prizes and produce, do the shopping, bake - and clear up afterwards - I can't list them all here but would like to thank everyone for doing their best to make the occasion a success!

Summer is almost upon us. And to celebrate, Junction is presenting a performance that was a major hit of last year’s summer festival season. ‘Another Someone’, by RashDash Theatre Company, won a Fringe First award at Edinburgh and has received a host of glowing reviews from publications around the UK. Since their three-week run at the Bedlam Theatre in Edinburgh, as part of the Festival Fringe, RashDash have toured extensively throughout the country, to packed auditoriums and delighted audiences.

‘Another Someone’ is a show all about enjoyment, laughter and how to be happy. With stories of pancakes for breakfast, squidgy parcels through the letterbox, new shoes, the distant smell of garlic and onions frying. The company combine drama, live music and passionate physicality, to take a sideways look at a world where celebrity is imminently possible, and where ordinary just isn’t good enough.

RashDash create exciting work that often challenges our ideas about what theatre is. In this new show, the performers combines dance, live music, cabaret and physical theatre to create a unique style of performance that is all their own.

RashDash was founded in 2008 by Abbi Greenland and Helen Goalan recent graduates of Hull University where they studied drama before. The rest of the Another Someone company consists of singer/songwriter Becky Wilkie, and performer Marc Graham. Following past productions of ‘The Honeymoon’, ‘Never enough’ and ‘Strict Machine,’ and their upcoming production ‘Scary Gorgeous,’ RashDash evolved from a desire to make physically exciting, challenging and experimental shows – which they achieved with great success in this award-winning show.

Tickets for this performance are also available as part of the venue’s ‘4 for 3’ offer – buy tickets for three shows and get a fourth one free. Says Chris Williams, Marketing Officer at Junction: ‘This is a really exciting and innovative performance, and it’s uplifting too. And as one of the less mainstream shows in our programme, we’re encouraging people to give this one a try as their free fourth ticket. A Right Royal Wedding Tea Party - 29th April

Dear residents and friends of Eastrington.

Everyone is welcome to come and celebrate the Royal Wedding at
Eastrington's Right Royal Wedding Tea Party on Friday 29th April from
2 pm onwards at Eastrington Village Hall.

Please come along for a lovely afternoon out (hopefully with plenty of
sunshine), bring your family and friends, and pass on this message to
your friends.

The hall and cricket pavilion will be decked out with bunting and
flags, and we'll serve a proper sit down tea with jellies,
trifles, sandwiches and cakes - there is no charge but donations are
welcome. Bouncy castle free. Come dressed up if you like - wedding
outfits, tiaras, lookalikes, historical royals - prizes for best
costumes! Activities include children's craft tables and games, music,
dancing,
raffle, tombola, bar open. All profits will go towards village hall funds.
